The International English Language Testing System ( IELTS ) is the world’s leading English proficiency test , developed by some of the world’s leading experts in language assessment , and is a test designed to assess the English language skills of non- English speaking students seeking to study in an English speaking country .

This not only prepares you for a study in an English speaking environment , but also equips you for a life in such a situation .It assesses your ability to understand and produce both written and spoken language and to organize your study for the academic tasks that awaits you in that country .

The IELTS test consists of two versions , the Academic Module and the General training Module .The Academic module is for those who seek entry to a university or institution of higher education , and the General Training module is for those students seeking entry to a secondary school or to vocational training courses .

The test comprises of four modules testing each of the four skills , like Reading,Writing , Listening and Speaking . The Listening and the Speaking tests are the same for both Academic and General Training students , however it is different in Reading and Writing .
Your IELTS results will be recorded in a Test Report Form ( TRF ) and will be available 13 days after the test and it is valid for 2 years . There are no restrictions on retaking IELTS . You can register for a test as soon as you feel you are ready to do so.

The maximum marks for each module is 9 , and the overall is recorded as out of 9 .
Performance is rated in each skill on a scale of 9 to 1 .

As a general rule , scores below Band 5 in any skill are considered too low for academic study . Scores above Band 6 are deemed to be adequate to good . overall Band scores of 5 or 6 are borderline and may not be acceptable at many institutions .
